Lights Out

Desde meados de fevereiro deste ano praticamente tudo o que vivi foi em função deste intercâmbio. Vacinas, exames, estágio, referências, passaporte, palestras, testes de inglês, muitos emails trocados com agentes, horas e horas lendo blogs (inclusive este), pastas e mais pastas de arquivos salvos, uploads, impressões, fotos, sonhos e dúvidas. E é por isso que escrevo o segundo e último post neste blog com o coração apertado e cheio de pesar.

Não é fácil desistir. Quaisquer que sejam os motivos, não é fácil abandonar um sonho que estava tão próximo de se concretizar. Mas chega de drama e vamos ao que interessa!

"Tia Biaaaaaaaaaaaaaaanca, como você montou seu APRIQUEIXON?"

Segui apenas uma regra básica: FUI SINCERA! 

Fico impressionada com a quantidade de gente que, durante o processo de preenchimento do application, manda você parecer perfeitinha. Perfeição não existe e acredito que boas Host Families sabem disso melhor do que ninguém. Pense que você vai passar 1 ano ao lado daquelas pessoas e que você não vai conseguir fingir ser uma pessoa que não é durante todo esse tempo. A não ser que seu nome seja Carmen Lúcia. 

Em nenhum momento coloquei que tinha habilidades que não dominava ou que gostava de coisas que não gosto. Ao responder sobre preferências de idade e quantidade de crianças, fui honesta comigo mesma e coloquei ali apenas o que achava que seria capaz de lidar. Trocando em miúdos, não coloque que você cuidaria de 4 crianças numa nice se você sabe que ficaria louca varrida com 4 crianças dançando rumba na sua cabeça. Cada um tem uma habilidade e pra cada uma delas há uma família interessada. Acredite, você não precisa mentir sobre você.

Acredito que no application, duas coisas são muito importantes: a "Host Family Letter" e as fotos de apresentação. A "Host Family Letter", no application da APIA, deve ter ao menos 600 palavras e é bom usá-la não só para dar uma ideia do seu nível de inglês, mas também para mostrar sua personalidade e para ressaltar coisas que você gostaria de ter na sua futura Host Family. Vocês verão que na minha carta eu falei sobre minha vida, meus planos futuros, experiência com crianças, et cetera. Vendi meu peixe, mas aqui e ali deixei algumas dicas de como eu gostaria que as coisas transcorressem. Tirem suas próprias conclusões:

"Dear future Host Family,

My name is Bianca, I’m 25 years old and I live in São Paulo, Brazil, with my mother, my father and our 4 beloved cats.. I also have a 31 years old sister who is married and live in her own house. She is about to have her first child and we just can't wait to meet our newest family member. Together we make a trustworthy, happy and loud family of Italian descent. We work hard here to keep things going well. I'm independent but at the same time I really enjoy the moments we have together as a family. We are truly blessed and everything I am and I have I thank to them.

I graduated in Gastronomy in 2008 and things are going pretty well but I am facing that time of life when you want to see and live new things to give birth to a whole new (and better) you. I want to improve my cultural baggage and my English to work in cruise ships when I come back from my Au Pair year. I'm one of those who enjoy a lot to travel by cruise ships and I've done that more than 5 times in the past years. I also intend to study and learn enough things to make me able to open a restaurant in a near future.

I’m a little bit older than the average Au Pair and I truly believe the age will work in benefit of us all. I consider myself a person of strong personality and I have a lot of ease in learning and adapting to new things. I'm outgoing, laid back, active and creative, but also calm, polite, responsible and smart. I drive since 2006 and I'm a pretty good driver. I never had a traffic ticket (not even a parking one) or have been involved in a car accident. Yep! I’m a good girl behind wheels!

Music is one of my passions. I play guitar (not that well, I confess) and I think it is an important thing to be stimulated in the childhood. Cooking is another thing I love to do. Cooking with your kids will be a funny way to spend the time together and I’ll love to make “brigadeiro” for you all! I love reading (especially those Marian Keyes romances) and on my free time I go to movies, out with friends to dance, talk, go shopping, museums (I live next to a gorgeous one here in São Paulo), zoos and have fun! I'm one of those people that like to have a well-marked agenda to plan things with antecedence, make the day-a-day routine easier and make sure everything will work perfectly. 

I’m kind with people and I like to treat everyone with respect and consideration. In my opinion, children need to have a sensible person around to understand their emotional and intellectual needs. I love to be able to help them to build a good character. I was always thought to be responsible and honest to gain trust and independence and that's how I think you can build a conscious adult and a conscious society.

My last childcare experience was at a daycare centre nearby and I took care of approximately 20 children there. The children I took care of were between 2 and 8 years old. I helped them with some school exercises, drawing, telling stories, to brush their teeth (...)

Before that I did some babysitting for two adorable brothers and one young girl. They are between 4 and 8 years old and I was responsible for taking them to school and some other activities like making and giving lunch, going to zoos, parks, museums, playgrounds, helping with the homework and supervising their schedule to make sure they were doing their obligations.

I really intent to make this cultural experience something unique in our lives and I expect to have a true friendship with you, my Host Family, because that’s what the word “FAMILY” means to me. By being and Au Pair I intend to grow up as a person, gaining a totally different knowledge of how life can be. By being part of an American family I intend to live unforgettable moments of fun, joy and happiness and create a bond for life.

I just want to let you know I am very excited to live the “American way of life” and see the beauties of your country.

Confesso que fiz e refiz essa merda umas 4 ou 5 vezes e só parei porque sabia que eu nunca acharia que tinha ficado boa o suficiente. Faça a sua sem pressa, mas deixe por último, assim não terá tempo de ficar relendo e mudando tudo.

Quanto as fotos, é muito óbvio que serão seu cartão de visitas, aquilo que fará você se destacar. Mais uma vez, tente transparecer sua personalidade nelas. Mostre sua família, seus amigos, suas fotos mais espontâneas, que quase nunca são as mais bonitas, eu sei, mas mostre quem você é. Aí vai uma montagem com algumas fotos que coloquei no meu applicaton:

Espero ter ajudado, pra que assim vocês tenham +/- uma noção do que fazer, que fotos tirar, como começar a escrever e tudo mais. 

Mas antes de me despedir de vez quero deixar mais uma dica. Eu ainda não estava online, mas já havia pago o valor da inscrição. Quando eu comuniquei a minha agente (lembrando que estava indo pela Experimento/APIA) da minha desistência, ela me informou que o cancelamento do programa acarretaria  na retenção de parte do valor já pago. Ao consultar o contrato, verifiquei que havia um prazo de 60 dias para que o programa fosse cancelado sem nenhum ônus e que eu conseguiria receber de volta o valor integral. Caso alguma de vocês um dia venha a passar por isso, não confiem cegamente no que lhe dizem. CONSULTEM SEMPRE SEUS CONTRATOS!
